Retaining Wall Drainage: Why It Matters

The unglamorous system behind the wall face is what actually keeps a retaining wall standing. Here's how it works.

Ask any experienced hardscaper what kills retaining walls and you'll hear the same answer: water. A retaining wall doesn't just hold back soil — it holds back the water in that soil, and water is heavy. When it can't escape, hydrostatic pressure builds until the wall bulges, cracks, or topples. Good drainage is what makes a wall last 40 years instead of five.

Why drainage is non-negotiable in Iowa

Eastern Iowa's clay-heavy soils hold water like a sponge, and our freeze-thaw winters expand that trapped water into ice, prying walls apart from behind. A wall with no drainage plan is fighting these forces with nothing but its own weight — a fight it eventually loses.

The four parts of a proper drainage system

  1. Gravel backfill. A zone of clean, angular crushed stone directly behind the wall gives water an easy path down instead of soaking into the soil against the wall face.
  2. Perforated drain pipe. A pipe (often called a drain tile or French drain) at the base of the gravel collects water and carries it away to daylight or a drainage outlet.
  3. Filter fabric. Geotextile fabric wraps the gravel so surrounding soil doesn't wash in and clog the system.
  4. Weep holes or outlets. Openings that let collected water exit the wall rather than pooling behind it.

Geogrid: the reinforcement most DIY walls skip

For walls over about 3–4 feet, drainage alone isn't enough. Geogrid — layers of synthetic mesh laid between courses and extending back into the soil — ties the wall and the earth behind it into a single reinforced mass. It's invisible when finished, which is exactly why budget builders leave it out. It's also why their walls lean.

Grading and surface water

Drainage isn't only about what happens behind the wall. The ground above should slope away from the top of the wall so rainfall and snowmelt don't run straight into the backfill. Proper finish grading and, where needed, surface drains keep water moving in the right direction.

Do all retaining walls need drainage?

Practically all of them, yes. Any wall holding back soil that can get wet needs a way for water to escape. The rare exception is a very short freestanding wall retaining well-drained material, but for typical yard walls in Iowa, drainage is essential.

What is the gravel behind a retaining wall for?

The clean crushed stone behind the wall - called drainage aggregate or backfill - gives water an easy vertical path to a drain pipe at the base instead of saturating the soil pressing against the wall. It relieves the hydrostatic pressure that causes failure.

What are weep holes in a retaining wall?
